Astra's said to me she'd like to do Carrion Crown, so I thought I'd start up a thread for it. If you're also interested in joining, please post here, even if it's just a short yes.

I'd prefer to play, but I'm happy to run it if we can get enough people interested. If you want the source books for it to run it, I can send you those. You can also download the Player's Guide for free.

In the meantime, if you want to introduce a character, you can do so here or in the character introductions thread. I'll leave my own character for a little until I can think of something suitable/know if I'll play or GM.

Yay, thanks Veggies! I'll look forward to this.

If you have any thoughts beyond what the player's guide suggests, you should let us know. I'll read through it and come up with a character concept.

From what I've read so far, I'll be sticking to my basic idea of sticking to conventional races (core + races appropriate to the theme (no drow or gargoyles)).

All core and advanced class guide classes open (unchained optional) and advanced players guide classes open to negotiation.

I hope you mean Advanced Player's Guide is fine and Advanced Class Guide is open to negotiation.

Also, what about Magus/Gunslinger/Samurai/Ninja/all the occult classes? Just for completeness.

Also, how are you going to do the ability score generation? Standard Pathfinder rolls, point buy, what have you?

Yes, that... Players guide is fine, class guide less so.

I reckon this is the only adventure path I've read up until this point where I'd be totally alright with occult content as it fits the theme well, so that'll be alright. I'll have to brush up on the rules for it.

Magus is fine, I'm not sure about gunslingers, and ninhas and samurai are probably best avoided.

To keep player power to a sensible level for the adventure path, it'll be run with the AP's standard of 15 point buy.

This is one adventure path where the players guide is essential in the initial development of a character (particularly page 12).

I'm almost sort of tempted to completely randomise race and class to see what I end up with and take it from there. Last time I saw that used, it spat out a Suli Brawler - a surprisingly good combo for a random generator. I've included all the races from here and only included the permitted classes. Editable by GM should he care to limit things. I might *not* use it, depending on whether I can think of anything or not, but it's an option.

Now... creepy character ideas. Creeeeepy character ideas...

Just a warning, Ustalav isn't renowned for it's acceptance of other people's cultures. Be wary of what you end up choosing lest the peo9ple think you're a little bit too weird.

Heh, fair enough. Although sort of comically, one of the ideas I was leaning towards was an Android Void Kineticist (with the Elemental Asthetic archetype). Well, I might still use the character, if differently. Should work with Dhampir.

I've got two martial characters in mind. One is Mister Crivens, who will fit at least the first bit well (as you'll see if I play him). The other is scary. Scary as in "How high did you get your intimidate modifier!?".
More magically, I've got the Dhampir Kineticist as above, a changeling girl who calls herself 'The Watcher' and a local noble who, repeatedly drained by a vampire for a time, has developed some unusual abilities.

Which I pick I'll see what other people do, and which I feel has the most promise when I come back and look in a day or two.

Nice to meet you Black Vegetable, and thank you for running Carrion Crown In Love

The first reason why I want to play this campaign is, suddenly, I want to play a Necromancer Drunk

(Afterward I found I was inspired by one of my favorite female singer:

wait, isn't that Stag's Helm?!)

Since White Necromancer is a 3rd party class, if Black Vegetable does not like it, I am fine with Bones Mystery Oracle. Happy

As for race... Vishkanyas is cool, but are they oviparous or viviparous? It determines my character will adventure with an infant corpse or a rotten egg...

While I'm generally not too fond of third party content, the White Necromancer class would be very effective in this campaign and quite flavorsome too. I'd definitely be willing to allow it, in fact I encourage it. I look forward to seeing one in action.

I think I'll set a hard cap on characters to keep inside the core and featured races. Other races outside that are generally too difficult to find proper information on and so it's very difficult to develop a common attitude towards them.

Thank you again for hosting this game Black Vegetable!

First thing first, I was interested in the campaign because of the "horror" aspect of this adventure (I've been in contact with the Cthulhu's Series lately, in which the horror plays a heavy role).

And as for my character, I was inspired by a friend to create a great-sword wielder. So far the idea is a Human Barbarian. Any recommendations about Rage Powers and Feats to complement with Great-sword?

Depending on whether you take Chained or Unchained, I'd have different suggestions. Good feat choices are Raging Vitality to stop the horrible instant death when you hit 0 HP. Power Attack and Furious Focus are solid as well, but things like Step Up or intimidating Prowess can be nifty. Blind fight is always a good choice, particularly when things have mirror image later on and you're better off closing your eyes than trying to hit them normally.
If you're going Chained, definitely go for Reckless Abandon. For both of them, Superstitious is very good, as is No Escape. Scent can be useful at times (esp. with blind fight). Swift Foot or Shove Aside are other safe choices.

Hard to find something particularly appropriate, but this is what I'm feeling at the moment.

Also, at the risk of doing weird stuff with the plot...  (I did this in a special font which I might continue to use for this, which I've attached here, along with easy installation instructions. While I like it, there are other, more readable fonts that don't require being obnoxiously large to read. There's another one I might try later to see how it compares)

The room is dark and cool. Your candle flickers slightly in an unseen breeze as you enter the room, and you suddenly notice someone standing quite still in the corner of the room, the light glinting off their eyes. Her eyes. They shine with an unblinking, almost malevolent intensity. She's dressed as a maid, with dark, frilled dress and little white headband, and carries a broom with her. The girl is grinning widely and cocks her head a little before speaking in a clear, girlish soprano.

Tee hee, you found me. You weren't supposed to see me. Daddy's going to be mad. Tee hee hee, really mad. It was going to be a surprise when I grabbed you by the leg in the cemetery during the funeral.
She licks her lips absentmindedly and comes closer, but never stops grinning. Now the light's clearer, you can see her a little better. Her eyes are mis-matched; one a dark red, the other a dull grey. She has long dark hair, with a few distinct streaks of white, and pale skin. It's also clear that the maid isn't a girl, but a short, lightly built woman.
Well, come on then. They're waiting for you. Don't be like that, it was only a joke. Tee hee, don't worry, I wouldn't hurt you.
..Unless I could get away with it.
The maid starts leading you through the house, talking a little to you, and about herself when you ask. Me? I'm just a maid here. Alice Crivens. Alice the Watcher, the Professor used to call me. I was one of his proteges, but we couldn't afford the tuition, so Daddy and I worked here to cover costs. Daddy's the butler, but he's away on other work right now, otherwise he'd have seen you in.
Tee hee hee, Mummy's dead. Funny you should ask that. Just a few years ago. She was a Night Hag, and some fruitloops barged into her home and killed her and her coven. Daddy was very angry about that, because they were awfully rude about it. Didn't even pay tax on the things they stole from her.
Alice strokes her broom lovingly. This old broom is all I have left of Mummy. It used to fly, but the magic's gone now. Daddy's taught me how to use it in other ways, though. Tee hee hee, Daddy's very good at that sort of thing. One day, I'll find that pesky thief and kill him with this very broom. Tee hee, that would make Mummy very happy.
Alice brings you to a stop outside an old, oak door. This is the place. Go on it, they're expecting you. Tee hee, don't worry about me, I'll be there if they need me. With that, the maid steps back into the shadows and vanishes.
And I'll be watching you... her voice, even though it is no louder than a whisper, sounds as if it might come from anywhere in the room. With a start, you realise that Alice had been staring unblinkingly at you for your whole conversation, and never once stopped her wide grin.

Being a fairly linear adventure path this should move relatively quickly (especially when compared to my usual campaign speeds). I would like to try for a GM post every day or two, though that may be wishful thinking.
I'll make an effort to check it a few times a day to make sure I don't miss anything.

And to be consistent, I simply don't like running XP anymore. I'll have everyone level up at appropriate stages, which are conveniently located at the start of each module.

Good call on the unchained, Ximon. I believe that they really did make it a lot simpler. I didn't mention it, but there are some cool archetypes that I should point out if you want ideas.
Invulnerable Rager reduces the damage you take by a lot, in exchange for having a lower AC, sometimes. (Spoiler: My experience with barbarians is that you're basically going to be hit regardless of what you do, so this is great).
Urban Barbarian is nifty since you're more flexible with rage and able to do intelligent things while raging, at the cost of rages not being quite so powerful.
Wild Rager is a bit of a gamble, but very powerful: you sometimes get confused, but you get an extra attack early on, which is extremely good (I'd suggest nabbing the Iron Will feat at some stage if you go for this)

If my count is correct that makes 3 players. The adventure path is written for 4 though it could be easily modified to allow more.

In response to Astra: You make a fair point, Fetchlings are probably a little too powerful and wouldn't really add much to the adventure path that you wouldn't be able to get your hands on easily. At this point you are really open to any of these classes provided you have justified it and have a reason to attend Professor Lorrimor's funeral.

If you're worried about us struggling because there are currently only three of us, my suggestions would be:

  • Do XP (so we're at an appropriate level for the challenges we've faced) or else level us up slightly earlier. Checking xp totals, at level 4, we should be a level ahead and stay there, but you should make the level ups slightly later than they suggest. If more people come in, just hold off the levels.
  • Give a slight ability score boost or give a bonus feat
  • Just get other people in

My quick adjustments for having more people would be:

5 People:

  • Increase weak enemy numbers by 25%
  • Tough monsters with minions have 50% more minions
  • Solo tough monsters have a class level (or two). Maybe NPC levels to see how well it works. Alternatively, the Advanced simple template. If they're not monsters, either Advanced, 2 levels in a different class or 1 more level in the same class.
  • Alternatively, ignore their often stupid tactics. Maybe shuffle feats around if they have stupid things like Skill Focus:Profession(Baker)

6 people:

  • Increase weak enemy numbers by 50%
  • Tough monsters with minions have twice as many minions or a template or two.
  • Tough solo monsters have two of these templates: Advanced, Giant, Fiendish, Mutant. Alternatively, try a class template, or just give them some class levels yourself. Be careful if the levels stack well.
  • Always make the monsters act sensibly, or have some sort of knowledge of the PCs so they can prepare something to counteract some of their nastier combos.

Once I have builds from Ximon and Astra, I'd be content to start and slot more in later if people show interest. The early parts of the adventure path are quite flexible and should allow for some nice roleplaying from everyone.

Also, just for a small early boost, you may all take a story trait from the players guide as a bonus. If you already took a trait from there, you may take an additional standard trait.

Hah, I was going to take the hilarious power of suggestion trait, but since I already have an equipment trait I'll have to take Fate's Favoured instead. I'd already taken Teacher's Pet as the campaign trait since they give nice little benefits in addition to giving nice continuity.
These are now in my stat block (which you can get to via my signature)

I have told Ximon my character story, with him helping me, it should can be done soon.

Except to story, my character creation is about 95% done, yet I have some questions:

1. With Race Trait Negative Energy Affinity, will I hurt myself when casting Cure Light Wounds?

2. If I choose Animate Dead as my subject of Campaign Trait Inspired by Greatness, does Lesser Animate Dead get adjustment too?

3. What is your idea of Whip and Scorpion Whip?

Good to hear you have a character concept in the making.

If you have negative energy affinity then you will unfortunately be harmed by positive energy and this imlncludes cure spells. But noone but you has to know that. Imagine a cleric casts harm on you trying to kill you, 110 free hp.

Given the nature of those two spells I'd almost be okay with the trait affecting both, though rules as written wouldn't allow it.

Whip and scorpion whip are totally valid as weapon choices, but both are quite weak and the scorpion whip doesn't have any benefits except performance.

Maybe I got it wrong, but I thought the first question Astra was asking: if her character has the Race Trait Negative Energy Affinity and this same character has the magic Cure light Wounds in the spell list, does this character gets hurt when he/she cast the Cure light Wounds on another Character?

Thanks for clarifying that!
I didn't got a clear concept about this situation in the past, but when Astra pointed this out it really kept me thinking for a long while. Because in most of the cases I have seem, a creature with the <Negative Energy Affinity> they won't have <positive energy spells>, so this was quite confusing.

Now it's my turn... sorry... Sad but I got some questions on my own Character:

About Character Background story:
1) is it possible for my PC to be related to another PC? for now the idea is something like a Master-and-Servant relationship between Astra's PC and mine.

2) if the above situation is valid, do I need to specify this "relationship" in both Characters Stories?

About Character Abilities and restrictions:
1) I have chosen the Race Skinwalker, if I do not choose a specific heritage, what "animal" does my character resemble? the appearance description written on the rulebook is quite vague.

2) the bonus to Ability Score provided by Change Shape,
A) do I choose one score each time I use this ability, or
B) do I choose one score at the moment I create the character

thanks for the help and sorry for the time and trouble

I personally love having intercharacter relations in place at the start (and I might try to fit in as well later). Up to Veggies if he wants that though.

Skinwalker is handily flexible; you get to pick one of Str, Dex and Con each time you change shape, as well as one of the benefits of Claws, Darkvision or Natural Armour.

The base one is sort of a hybrid, not associated with a particular animal. It's sort of a mix. You could even say it changes based on the choices you take. I think it's intentionally vague for that reason.

OK.... Sorry for the long delay.... but it's finally done! here is my Character background story:

“Never heard of someone trying to ‘put on’ a manacle… ” The Blacksmith said, “especially the way YOU do!” the man passed two shackles of different size without chains attached.
“Tokens” a woman, no more than twenty, said as she tries to put one of the shackles on her neck.
“Tokens? You must have hit your head… no one wear those things! Only prisoners and sla…” the man stopped abruptly seeing the flames burning in the woman’s eyes.
“To remind me: Never trust a man unless they do good to you.” The woman said as he put on the other shackle on her left wrist.
The woman left the smith and took a very deep breath. A couple of months ago, she would have given all just to have these things off her, today, she is putting them on by her own will. Her mind brought her back to the time she was set free by a complete stranger.

An old man introduced himself to the slave dealers. By the way they greeted this old scholar, he is certainly someone famous or powerful. He looked in her direction and pointed at her. Minutes later her shackles were removed and that old man was there waiting for her.
“You are free now,” he said with a strange smile on his face. “Oh! Where are my manners! My name is Petros Lorrimor.” The man said. “Now it’s your turn.” Lorrimor blinked as if expecting a hen to laid eggs.
“Axelle…” the woman answered, still wary and perplexed. “Axelle Lawless”
“Come with me, Axelle.”
The man was kind to her; he gave her shelter and food and show respect to her and treated her like a human being. ‘Kindness’ was certainly something she hasn’t experienced in years and in more than one occasion Axelle asked how could she repay him. But Lorrimor never answered to that question, he never answered any question; he never asked any questions either, but he did pay very close attention every time Axelle was eager to speak. This strange and unsettling felling of the unknown tortured Axelle, more than all the torments she’s been through as a slave. She could picture terrible things happening to her masters, or cursing them in her heart just to ease the anger and despair. But she can’t do such things to Professor Lorrimor, not to a man that had released her and reminded her that kindness does exist. What kept her from staying and suffering was the last words she heard from mom: “do good to anyone who do good to you”. Another reason she dares not to leave was the old man’s ability to “read her mind”: Even though Lorrimor never really stopped her from leaving, he was able to say her thought out loud every time she planned about jumping out of the window or sneaking out of the house at night.
He would say something like: “you can just walk out from the door, why would you jump out of the window?” or “you can leave during the day, no one is going to chase after you! No need to leave at the middle of the night.”
And things like these went on for a couple of weeks, until one day, after Professor Lorrimor saw her wounds are healed, he told Axelle that he would call on her when the time comes. And before the two separated Lorrimor said to the still wary woman “Promise me you won’t seek revenge, after all you must live until I call on you!”

A month has passed and Axelle have not heard a word from the old Professor. She made this promise that is starting to be harder and harder to keep. She made this shackles to remind her, every time the scene of her family murdered, the faces of her tormentors laughing comes up in her mind Axelle would touch the shackles and recite the last word her mother told her: “do good to anyone who do good to you.” But as hard as she was trying, the fate play another foul trick to her once more…
About a year after the departure of Lorrimor, she met one of the men that made her life a misery in her time of wondering: the slave dealer and emissary of that Baron. Axelle followed the man all the way to her birthplace Druma. The thirst for revenge will call the feral part out of her during the night, but the face of Professor Lorrimor and the words from her mother will rise from the back of her head stopping her every time she felt the urge to lunge at this evil man.

In the end Axelle could not stand the hatred burning inside and decided to terminate the man. She planed very carefully, just like how she did when she is trying to hunt some cunning or overpowering beast; and the time spent in the barbarian tribe after her release served her good at this task. Life has taught Axelle too many lessons in the hard way: she trusted the Baron of Karcau, a man she barely knew, only to end up fulfilling the desires of a wickedly lustful man; she lost her family for escaping and trying to unveil the dark deeds of this spoiled noble, she became a slave after the failed attempt to murder the Baron. She won’t trust any men; she is not going to let this man leave with his life, and this time nothing is going to stand in her way. Axelle wanted to keep her promise, so she has to do this in a way no one, living or dead, will know that it was her who killed this man, in that case no one (including the professor) will prosecute her.

One rainy evening the opportunity came: the man left the town with a pair of bodyguards. At the outskirt of a small town in the depths of Druma, Axelle sought her chance; she let the rage inside burst out and turned herself into a feral shape. The rain has stopped, the carnage was bloody… yet… satisfying… but her just found peace was swiftly interrupted by the cries of another group of men running at full speed in her direction.

Axelle managed to silence the pursuers… but she was severely wounded. As her rage ended she felt her life was slipping away as well… tears ran down her now human eyes and she cursed herself for being unable to avenge her family by seeing the Baron die before her. At the gates of death she saw a feminine silhouette standing next to her.

"You have my appreciation, for that amazing battle," she said, "Consider saving your life as a reward for entertaining me." As the lady spoke she placed a hand on Axelle, and the shadows of death started to dissipate. Axelle opened her eyes and saw the lady walk away. She ran after the lady and asked if she wanted anything in return for saving her. A faint smile was on the lady’s face, she shook her head very gently: “You owe me nothing, my dear! That was your reward for entertaining me.” She didn’t wait for Axelle to reply and started to walk away. Axelle moved in front of her, the lady looked back, but her expression didn’t change. Axelle hesitated for the strange reaction of this woman and for what she is going to ask her: “Can you… keep this a secret… I made a promise and I just went back on my word by killing those men.” She looked down at the ground ashamed of failing over and over. The lady didn’t answer to her request; she kept that barely visible smile and stood there in silence. Axelle touched the shackle on her neck, after a brief pause she said: “Let me go with you. I’ll serve you for saving me and for keeping this secret for me.” The lady kept the faint smile and started to walk away again, but this time she was looking right into her eyes.

Few years have passed since that rainy night, and since then, Axelle have been serving her second savior hoping that what she did remained unknown.

The calling finally arrived, but it came alone with dreadful news: the word of the professor’s death. Lorrimor’s death brought great sorrow to Axelle, and at this point knowing the professor named her in his will terrified her: did he heard about what she did? Was he angry because she broke her promise? But no matter what awaited her, she must keep her word; even though the calling came from the tomb she still has to answer.

OH! And my CS is almost done as well! Just making the final touches, but I think I need a lil' help to make sure a couple of more things first:

Feats:
I saw this "Improved Critical" in the description it says:
"When using the weapon you selected, your threat range is doubled."
So... does that means that if I got lets say a "Greatsword" whose critical says "19-20/x2", I get to have this critical changed to "17-20/x2" or does it just advances the critical range to "18-20/x2" OR does this feat has no effect on weapons that has a critical range higher than 20?

Change Shape Racial Trait:
The description of this ability says:
"A skinwalker can change shape to and from a bestial form as a standard action. In bestial form, a skinwalker gains a +2 racial bonus to either Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution."
Now, the Barbarian's Rage has this part that says:
"Temporary increases to Constitution, such as that gained from bear's endurance, do not increase the total number of rounds that a barbarian can rage per day."
And now my questions is: if I choose the racial bonus from "Change Shape" to increase Cons, does this bonus counts towards the raging time? or is this racial bonus considered to be temporal bonus?

It doubles the chances of threatening a critical. A 20 becomes 19-20, a 19-20 becomes a 17-20 and a 18-20 becomes a 15-20. As a barbarian, you do most of your damage from flat bonuses rather than your dice, so you're likely to benefit most from either a x4 critical weapon (for crushing criticals) or a 18-20 range weapon (to get lots of higher damage attacks).

It can, in principle, be permanent. While it's not me, I'd consider doing as the Belt of Mighty Constitution does and treat it as temporary for a day. That is, it's fine when you're in bestial form for a few days, but if you swap in and out a lot it might be awkward.

Since I'm in the mood, and I don't think I will keep her history as secretive as it was, here is some more history for Alice. There are some bits which I'm skimming over because it uses two of my other characters from another campaign and while the stories might be good, they're less relevant (and also very slightly different to how things actually turned out)

Spoiler:

Also, I think all the character sheets are done, having peeked at Astra's account for this. Just waiting on a background? How soon are we able to begin?

I hope work works out okay for you Astra!

I may shuffle accounts to get one for going for Alice as well, but more likely I'll just scrap the one I'm using at the moment since that never does anything online anyway. I'll also put all of my background stuff in one place, since you've mentioned it.

Any last thoughts before I prepare the setting posts?
